Biography
Martin Schreiber, M.D., FACS, FCCM, FRCST (Hon), is an internationally recognized trauma and critical care surgeon, researcher, and Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. Over a career spanning combat hospitals in Iraq and Afghanistan, academic leadership, and more than 350 published studies, he has helped shape trauma care worldwide. He serves as Director of Surgical Research in the Department of Surgery at Madigan Army Medical Center.
His military service includes roles as Chief of Surgery for the 228th Combat Support Hospital in Tikrit, Iraq, as a surgeon with the 932nd Forward Surgical Team in Shank, Afghanistan, and as Director of the Joint Theater Trauma System for U.S. Central Command. These experiences honed his ability to deliver surgical care under extreme conditions and to build trauma systems for austere environments.
From 2008 to 2025, Dr. Schreiber was Professor of Surgery at Oregon Health & Science University, with additional appointments in physiology and pharmacology. He founded the Division of Trauma, Critical Care, and Acute Care Surgery and directed the Donald D. Trunkey Center for Civilian and Combat Casualty Care, bridging military and civilian medicine and training surgeons for both hospital and battlefield settings.
His research focuses on prehospital treatment of traumatic brain injury, hemorrhagic shock resuscitation, massive bleeding control, and blood product development. Supported by the Department of Defense, the National Institutes of Health, and private industry, his work has helped improve patient survival worldwide.
A dedicated educator, Dr. Schreiber serves as Adjunct Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University and as National Director of the Definitive Surgical Trauma Care Course, helping ensure surgeons are equipped to save lives, from the operating room to global conflict zones.
